Nostalgia Trip: Scooby-Doo

Cartoon Network Era

Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated (Cartoon Network 2010-2013)

Season 1 intro for Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated

The full cast of characters returned in their classic looks when the franchise moved to Cartoon Network in 2010. Scooby-Doo, Mystery Incorporated was the first title not to be directly connected to Hanna or Barbera, and it was also the first with Matthew Lillard voicing Shaggy. He, of course, played the character in the two feature films. It also brought back the recurring “you meddling kids” line.

Last, but not least, this series brought back the ongoing storyline aspect that hadn’t been seen since 1985. And on top of that, the story got more intricate and complex as the show went on. What began as a throwback to the comedy classics turned into a detailed story with real monsters involved.

Be Cool Scooby-Doo intro

Be Cool Scooby-Doo debuted in 2016, which again overhauled the show and revised the character designs. A 3D animated look was a first, as was the Mystery Machine now inexplicably rigged with all kinds of gadgets. This show ran for two seasons before the franchise returned back to its classic roots for its current incarnation.

Scooby-Doo and Guess Who (Boomerang)

The Scooby Gang encounters Kevin Conroy’s Batman

For the first time in 45 years, Scooby-Doo brought back the “guest star” format for Scooby-Doo and Guess Who. Like The New Scooby-Doo Movies, fictional and real-life guest stars alike would meet the Scooby Gang. First season guests included Weird Al Yankovic and Batman. The latter being voiced by regular Batman actor Kevin Conroy.

And that brings us up to date on all things Scooby-Doo! Of course, we can’t talk Scooby without bringing up the post-modern tropes that came about over the years.

  • If they weren’t a band, why did they always travel together in a van? Did they pack their luggage and laundry too?
  • Fred almost always ran off with the two women leaving Shaggy and Scooby alone
  • Shaggy and Scooby always had the munchies, which some people took as them being potheads
  • Velma was a lesbian

Do you have any Scooby-Doo memories or favorite moments? We’d love to hear them!
