Hawkeye Episode 5: “Ronin” Review

The penultimate episode confirms a fan-favorite character

SPOILER WARNING! The following contains slight spoilers for Hawkeye Episode 5! Do not proceed if you wish to avoid spoilers!

MAJOR POINTS

  • Kingpin is indeed in the MCU proper
  • Jack has been arrested and taken away by the police
  • Maya now knows Clint is The Ronin
  • Yelena was blipped/snapped
  • Kazi seems to know more about Clint than what he’s telling Yelena.

In a flashback to 2018, Yelena gets snapped/blipped away. She then returns and learns what happened and that Natasha is dead.

Kazi tends to Maya’s wounds while she tells him about Kate. He also says that while he will help her kill Ronin but warns that she needs to end her quest for revenge.

Yelena visits Kate in her home and reveals that she is here to kill Clint. She warns her that Clint is not the good man Kate thinks he is, and not to get in her way again. The next day, Kate finds Jack being arrested for connections to the Sloan company. He mockingly feigns ignorance and states he will get this all sorted out. Afterward, Kate leaves a ton of voicemails to Clint begging him to call back.

Clint visits the site of The Battle of New York and openly speaks like he’s talking to Natasha, and says he’s sorry for what he’s about to do. He then sends a message to the Tracksout goons that says he will meet with Maya at the site where she first encountered Ronin. Then he calls Laura to tell her that Maya had the Rolex. He also states that Maya likely hired Yelena to kill him.

That night, Clint meets with Maya. After taking out all of her goons and defeating her in combat, he reveals to Maya that he is indeed the Ronin. Clint spares her life and tells her to stop coming after him. Maya refuses and tries to kill Clint, but Kate thwarts her attack in the nick of time.

Clint and Maya have breakfast with one of the LARPers. Kate gets a photo message on her phone that’s presumably from Yelena. It shows Eleanor meeting with Kingpin.

MAJOR QUESTIONS

  • Is Eleanor shady too?
  • How much does Kazi actually know?
  • How the blazes can they wind all this up in one episode?

FINAL GRADE: A

The plot has certainly thickened with the appearance of Kingpin. I was tempted to give this episode an A just on his appearance alone. Is Eleanor aware that he is a crime boss? And if she does, how could she not know of Jack’s connections to Sloan Limited?

We only have one more episode to go so it will be interesting to see if everything can be wound up. Though I will not complain if we get a Season Two. But with The Book of Boba Fett premiering in two weeks, it’s doubtful we will have more than these six episodes.
