The New Year is established, and so is one of the biggest sporting and pop culture events of the year! Many people watch The Superb Owl (Sorry, afraid to use the real term) simply for the commercials. Seth and Train return to talk about the Big Game movie trailers.
The second half is devoted to previewing the year 2020 in Geek Film.
BIG GAME MOVIE TRAILERS
Here are all the movies advertised during the commercial breaks. One Media’s YouTube page assembled them all in their full-length released form.
3:00 – Black Widow
- Red Guardian looks really angry
- Taskmaster uses his shield like Captain America
4:30 – No Time To Die
- Produces have clarified that James Bond will never be a woman
- The villain is portrayed by Rami Malek, who played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody
- They shoot up the Aston Martin
- Craig does seem to be the closest to how Ian Fleming pictured the character
9:30 – Minions: The Rise Of Gru
- Prequel to Despicable Me
- Full of 1970s tropes and pop culture
- Minions aren’t evil, they’re just Neutral Stupid
11:55 – Top Gun: Maverick
- Looks like it may be a chronicle of Maverick’s life
- It implies Goose’s son is in the movie
- Could we get Tom Skerritt? Michael Ironside? Val Kilmer? Kelly McGillis?
- Many different jets are shown in the trailer
17:00 – A Quiet Place Part 2
- The first one was a back to basics Creature Feature
- It looked like Lee died in the first film, but is clearly seen in this trailer
21:25 – Mulan
- The latest in the long line of Disney live-action remakes that go back as far as 101 Dalmations
- An amazing cast (Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee)
- No Ming-Na Wen, Sammo Hung, or Jackie Chan
- This is the moment when Seth realized Jackie Chan was awesome
- This could be a great example of a female protagonist. We talk about a great female protagonist Margot Lane way back in our inaugural entry for The Lesser Known Geek Hall Of Fame.
28:00 – Marvel Season 4 TV
- Falcon and Winter Soldier
- Baron Zemo is clearly shown in a brief shot
- Bucky still has his metal arm
- WandaVision
- Looks like it will parody popular sitcoms from different generations
- Dick Van Dyke Show, The Brady Bunch, and Full House
- Wanda is shown in her classic comic book costume in what looks like a Halloween
- With the switch between color and black and white, it may mean Wanda and Vision are trapped in a TV world
- Scarlet Witch has altered reality in the comics before, so this could be her own world
- Loki
- Loki wears a Time Variance Authority uniform
- This might be an answer to DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow
- This is still an evil Loki who escaped during Avengers: Endgame
38:30 – Sonic The Hedgehog
- It was definitely the most “out of left field” trailer because it starts out like it’s going to be a sports commercial
- Neal McDonough, Dum Dum Dugan in The MCU and Damian Darkh in The Arrowverse, has a role in this movie as well
- FUN FACT: Neal McDonough voiced Oliver Queen before Arrow began
41:45 – Fast 9
- F&F is this generation’s Bullitt, Smoky & The Bandit, or Dukes Of Hazzard
- John Cena plays Dom’s long lost brother. Maybe he was in the other movies, you just couldn’t see him
45:50 – Spongebob: Sponge On The Run
- A 3D CGI take on Spongebob
